Students on Twitter - What is good design?

Critique on technological outcome's design

This year my Yr.13 students are writing a report for an external standard that requires them to critique the design elements of two or more technological outcomes. The collaboration between teachers and students lead to an inspiring discussion between the food technology students and design students on Twitter. The questions I posted for the discussion and the respective answers are as follows.

Q1.What attributes would a simple modern design have?

A1. lots of geometric shapes, very simple colours with not a lot on the page. less is more, clean lines, form and function allowing for tactile and texture human elements.

What is good design?

Good design is something that appeals to a wide audience and demonstrates ideas clearly. Being creative and thinking of new ideas or using old ones in new ways to make people think about the piece. one that appeals to a range of people.

Are you able to mention some modernist artist?

A great artist would be Moholagy - Nagy

Q2 Any thoughts about how the same design elements could work in a food context?

A2. To present it would have a grid type feel about it with a contrast in colours. Also have lots of white space so product stands out

Would you call this- Gluten Free Flower Pot (all edible) a good or bad design?

Its a good design because its clever but still edible.

Q3. How has design changed over time and what factors influence that?

A3.Technology has advanced so much , that it has created a whole new realm of possibilities. Design has changed from not using technology to technology becoming the focus of design with programs like photoshop. The possibles include being able to have perfect lines and making it really precise. Having the ability to make different type fonts. As time progresses designs has become harder to create because it has most likely already been done so it becomes a hard market.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the teachers and students who made this collaboration possible :)
